Customer Comments: I am trying to figure out how to make the fireplaces helpful in heating the house. They are very small and is difficult to find a wood stove insert to fit it. I was looking at your blowers and doors and wanted to find out if that would be a good alternative. Chimneys are in great condition. I am uploading pictures for downstairs fireplace.
Our Comments: As we discussed, the firelaces are too small even for the blowers, much-less an insert. The alternative is to use glass doors to minimize the heat loss. Some doors can be made with ceramic glass so you can burn fires with the doors closed to lower the amount of cold air drawn into you home. Those with tempered glass can be burned closed if you are careful to build small fires. In both cases, you want to close the doors when the fire dies out so you can close off the fireplace to keep the cold air out during the night while the damper is open.
Note: Both of these fireplaces have a decorative piece at the top of the opening. Some of the doors I have chosen or designed specfically to allow you to see those pieces when the doors are open.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures around 450F without shattering and should be at least 8" from the flames. This is sufficient for closing the doors as the fire starts to die out to keep the heat in the home. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures around 1450F with direct flame contact. If you want the ability to burn continuous fires with the doors closed, you need ceramic glass. You can close the tempered glass doors when the fire starts to die out to keep the warm air in during the night.

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle relatively high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is not as heavy duty and rugged as steel or wrought iron, but it is the most affordable.

These doors are hand crafted by skilled artisans from Solid Brass or Steel, depending on the finish that is desired. Very high end, and very refined. Items made from solid brass come in a wide variety of hand crafted patinas and other finishes. Satin Nickel finishes done on solid brass are the finest quality and will not rust like plated steel.

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need gate mesh backup doors or mesh curtains behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.

If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.
