Gasket Sealed Fireplace Doors with Ceramic Glass for White Brick Fireplace - Project #21410

Customer Comments: I want sealed fireplace doors that are vented. Something that will prevent drafts when the doors are closed and a fire is not burning.I would like something that will be easy to clean with ceramic glass for burning the fire with the doors closed. Fireplace will be for vibes more than heating the living room. I will add a live edge thick wood mantle above it after the fireplace front is installed.

Our Comments: Doors that are gasket sealed with ceramic glass can be made from aluminum, steel or wrought iron. The aluminum doors will not seal as well, but are less expensive. Steel is in the middle and Wrought iron are the most rugged and durable. A black framed cabinet door will be the easiest to keep clean. Here are examples of both types. Ceramic glass is very expensive, so I will include pricing for both tempered and ceramic glass.

Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures around 450F without shattering and should be at least 8" from the flames. This is sufficient for closing the doors as the fire starts to die out to keep the heat in the home. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures around 1450F with direct flame contact. If you want the ability to burn continuous fires with the doors closed, you need ceramic glass. You can close the tempered glass doors when the fire starts to die out to keep the warm air in during the night.

Affordable Aluminum Doors

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle relatively high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is not as heavy duty and rugged as steel or wrought iron and does not seal as well, but it is the most affordable.

Medium to High-End Steel Doors

These doors are laser cut from 3/16" thick solid steel and come with tempered or ceramic glass. The ceramic glass will allow you to burn fires with the doors closed. You can add mesh curtains or gate mesh backup doors for spark protection when burning fires with the doors open.

Flat Steel

High End Hand Forged Wrought Iron Doors

Hand forged by a blacksmith from 1/4" thick solid wrought iron with heavy duty gasketed doors for a tighter seal and maximum draft reduction. Not only are these built to be used, they take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship and tasteful details. These doors are most commonly ordered with ceramic glass for burning fires with the doors closed.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need gate mesh backup doors or mesh curtains behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.

Glass Options

Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.

Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
