Customer Comments: Think I need a W: 36” x D: 16” x H: 8” grate. 8” clear under the grate. Currently the shorter grate does not allow fireplace to draft well. Fire place dimensions are approximately: Front: W: 61” x D: 22” x H: 31 1/2” Back: W: 50” x D: 22” x H: 31 1/2” Would like to buy a Grate and a Screen that fits the front and request your recommendations for both.
Our Comments: Here are some excellent ideas for screens and grates for your fireplace. As I mentioned previously, 8" is too tall for the grate. I would not recommend having it made more than 6" tall, which is the approximate height I have used in the mockups. Glass doors with ceramic glass are the ultimate treatement as they allow you to close the doors when the fire is burning to reduce smoke. Starting the fire with the doors and closing the doors when the fire is dying out will have the most impact on smoke reduction as the fire typcally does not smoke when it is burning hot. Glass doors will also reduce the heat loss during the night significantly since you must leave your damper open after building a fire.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures around 450F without shattering and should be at least 8" from the flames. This is sufficient for closing the doors as the fire starts to die out to keep the heat in the home. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures around 1450F with direct flame contact. If you want the ability to burn continuous fires with the doors closed, you need ceramic glass. You can close the tempered glass doors when the fire starts to die out to keep the warm air in during the night.

Mesh curtains are a very popular choice for large fireplaces. They are extremely convenient, you just slide them to the left and right when tending the fire rather than having to lift a screen and set it on the floor. They can be made with just the top bar and you can add a bottom bar to help prevent logs and ashes from rolling out onto the hearth. Large fireplaces like this use an I-Beam with a track and roller system that makes it easier to open and close and prevents the mesh from sagging and dragging on the fireplace floor.
