Custom Fireplace Glass Doors - Project #21343

Customer Comments: Fireplace screen to go in front of fireplace from floor to top of opening. We think 42” wide by 40” tall however will look to you for best recommendation. Screen will need feet on the outside so it will not fall over. The screen will get wet often and we do not want it to rust. Would like 1 or 2 handles to move away from opening. This is for a mountain home so rustic is good and oil rubbed bronze color. Thank you.

Our Comments: Here are a variety of screens that are made from rust resistant materials. Keep in mind that a flat screen requires rear feet in order to stand on its own when you set it aside to tend the fire. If you want the screen to sit flush against the fireplace, you cannot use the rear feet due the opening being raised in the wall, in which case you will need to lean the screen against the wall or railing. Bowed screens may be a better choice for this application.

Recommended Size: I am showing several sizes for these screens. For the single panel screens, if you use the rear feet, it is best to make the screen 3" larger than the opening on the top and each side. If you want the screen flat against the fireplace just overlapping the opening, I make it overlap 1" on the top and each side. Bowed screens should overlap about 3".

Fireplace Opening: 40 1/2" W x 30 1/2" H + (8" Raised)

Stainless Steel Screens

Stainless steel is an excellent material for outdoor fireplaces. It cannot be hammered like wrought iron, so it may not give you the rustic appeal that you desire, but it is very durable and less expensive than the zinc coated wrought iron. These screens use stainless steel perforated mesh (read more below).

Zinc Coated Wrought Iron

These wrought iron screens are hand forged by a skilled blacksmith at Stone Manufacturing. They are zinc coated with stainless steel wire mesh to resist rust in outdoor applications. These are very high-end products with the authentic hand crated rustic look you desire. The only finishes they recommend for outdoor applications are natural iron and rust.

Mesh Curtains

Mesh curtains are an option worth considering. The top and bottom bar are made fron zinc coated wrought iron with black stainless steel mesh and stainless steel hardware. The bottom bar is optional and can be made with a pet deterrant channel, which prevents the mesh from being pushed inwards to help keep varments out of the fireplace. The bottom bar also help keep ashes and logs from rolling out of the fireplace.

Perforated Mesh vs Wire Mesh

Wire mesh is most commonly used because it is easier to see through and does blocks less heat. Perforated mesh is very rigid and sturdy, but it is a bit harder to see through and tends to block more heat. I only recommend perforated mesh for larger fireplace screens that would otherwise require horizontal support bars when made with wire mesh. Horizontal support bars tend to change the look of a screen and obstruct the view of the fire, so they may be less desireable than perforated mesh.

Note: Hearth Creations outdoor fireplace screens made from 304 stainless steel are only available with perforated mesh.
