Wrought Iron Screens for Outdoor Hacienda-Style Beehive Fireplace - Project #21338

Customer Comments: Outdoor, hacienda-style beehive fireplace needs a wrought iron fire screen. San Diego, CA. So it’s a moderate “Mediterranean” climate with semi-tropical humidity in the late Summer/early Fall. It’s an outdoor fireplace, and my primary need is to protect people and the Saltillo pavers that front the hearth from flying embers and charcoal. It might be cool if the screen were curved to follow the beehive shape of the firebox. I look forward to your mockup.

Our Comments: Creating mockups in this shape is difficult, so I have provided just two showing an inside fit and outside fit option. Each of the additional screens shown below the mockups can be made in this beehive shape, but I cannot create mockups for them. The zinc coated wrought iron screens are available in black, natural iron or rust finish with black stainless steel mesh to withstand the outdoor elements (see finish samples further below). These are very high end screens hand crafted in the USA by a highly skilled blacksmith at Stone Manufacturing. I also included a more affordable option made from powder coated stainless steel.

Inside Fit vs Overlap: If you want the screen to fit inside, it would be made about 1/2" smaller than the opening on the top and sides, which would not provide 100% spark protection. There are 3" long rear stabilizers on the back of the screen at the bottom that allow the screen to stand on its own and would prevent you from pushing it back any further than 3" from the ash lip. An overlap fitting screen will provide the best spark protection and be the most stable.

Bowed Screen and Template: In either case, the screen can be made with a slight bow to follow the shape of the fireplace at the bottom. The bow may not match the fireplace exactly, particularly if it is both bowed and slanted. I will provide instructions for creating a template.

Stainless steel is a less expensive alternative if the wrought iron screens are outside the budget. This screen can only be made flat in the beehive shape, it cannot be bowed. This screen can be made in These Powder Coat Finishes
