Glass Doors and Metal Mantels for Fireplace Remodel - Project #21329

Customer Comments: We are interested in your quotes for a fireplace mantle and bi-fold glass door for our new home. Have included dimensioned drawings/renderings depicting your mantle and inset glass doors.

Our Comments: Here are some examples of mantels and glass doors per our further email communications. The mantel you included in your diagram with the wood inserts must be at least 12" away from the fireplace opening because it is combustible. You do not have that much room, so I did not use that in the mockups. The mantels I used are all 100% metal with high temperature insulation to help protect the components above the fireplace. Please keep in mind there is no guarantee regarding the amount of heat the shelf will block as every fire is different. Also, these mantels do not have corbles that support the weight but will be sufficient to handle items that are typically placed on a mantel shelf.

Affordable Aluminum Doors

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle relatively high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is not as heavy duty and rugged as steel or wrought iron, but it is the most affordable.

Medium to High-End Steel Doors

Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.

Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures around 450F without shattering and should be at least 8" from the flames. This is sufficient for closing the doors as the fire starts to die out to keep the heat in the home. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures around 1450F with direct flame contact. If you want the ability to burn continuous fires with the doors closed, you need ceramic glass.

Mantel Finish Options

Powder Coat Finishes

Aluminum and Steel Doors

Powder coat finishes are applied electrostatically, and are then cured buy heat. This type of finishing process is superior to high temperature paint because it forms a hard coating over the metal that is highly impervious to heat and will not rust. The process is precisely formulated and produces very consistent results with fewer imperfections. It is also the least expensive finishing process, although it has limitations and cannot replicate the more expensive artistic finishes that are hand crafted.

Premium Finishes

Steel Doors & Aluminum Doors

Premium finishes are either hand crafted or must go through multiple steps to be applied. Because these are hand applied the finishes are not as consistent and each product will have slight variations from another. If you are looking for a more consistent finish we recommend you stick with the powder coat or anodized finishes. Stainless steel is included in this group just because the cost is the same as other premium finishes.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need gate mesh backup doors or mesh curtains behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

Glass Options

Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.

Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
