Free Standing Glass Screen for Stacked Stone Fireplace with Gas Logs - Project #21322

Customer Comments: I’m looking for a simple bevel edged ultra clear 3/8” tempered glass fireplace screen with nickel feet. My fireplace opening measures: 42” (w) X 26” (h). Should the glass therefore be 44” (w) X 27” (h)?

Our Comments: Free standing glass screens are purely decorative and are not for spark protection. I recommend having the glass made either 1" larger on the top and each side, or 1" smaller. I have created mockups to show you how it will look either way. These can be made less expensive clear tempered glass that has a slight green hue or ultra-clear low iron glass at a premium. Ultra-clear glass has vibrant light blue edges, but the glass itself has no color. Both types can have 1/4" or 3/8" thick glass with flat polished edges. You can also have 3/16" ceramic glass at nearly 3 times the price if you want the glass closer to the fire.

Important Notice: Free standing glass fireplace screens made with tempered glass are for decorative use only and CANNOT be placed in front of a wood burning fire or ventless gas log. If used with vented gas logs, the glass must remain at least 8" in front of the fireplace opening. If you wish to burn wood fires or want the the screen closer to the opening, you must have ceramic glass. Tempered glass screens can shatter from heat if used improperly as shown in this Video from the Kelly and Ryan Show. Most websites selling glass screens do not post this warning or hide it in their fine print, yet it applies to ALL free standing glass screens regardless where they are sold.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

Glass Options

Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.

Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
