Mesh Doors and Curtain Screens for Outdoor Fireplace - Project #21312

Customer Comments: Firebox is 35.5" tall x 41.5" wide This is a freestanding outdoor fireplace in the yard. I’m looking for something to help protect the opening from the wind but still allow the heat out. I was thinking either a simple hanging mesh or metal door with mesh. No glass or freestanding screen.

Our Comments: Prices for what you have described are all over the place based on the materials and durability outdoors. I have included options from the low to high end for your consideration. Some are made with wire mesh or perforated mesh. Read about the difference below the mockups.

Mesh Curtains

These mesh curtains are made from stainless steel including the header bar, bottom bar, mesh curtains and hardware. Mounting to the bottom of the ledger stone may prove to be a challenge. I need to see a picture of the bottom of that stone to determine how the top bar will need to be mounted.

Affordable Aluminum Doors

Aluminum is an excellent material for outdoor fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle relatively high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is not as heavy duty and rugged as steel or wrought iron, but it is the most affordable.

Medium Duty Stainless Steel Doors

These doors are made from light duty 304 stainless steel as a more affordable option to the heavy duty models. Stainless steel is an excellent material for outdoor fireplaces in non-coastal regions. If you are close to the ocean, 304 stainless steel will eventually rust, but is much more durable than normal steel.

Heavy Duty Stainless Steel

These doors are made from 3/16" thick 304 stainless steel with sturdier hinges for added durability for those who use the fireplace often. They can be made with single, cabinet or bifold doors in a variety of powder coat finishes. We recommend either charcoal or black for the best durability outdoors.

High End Zinc Coated Wrought Iron Doors

Hand forged by a blacksmith from 1/4" thick zinc coated wrought iron. Not only are these built to be used, they take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship and tasteful details. The zinc coating holds up well outdoor. We recommend lubricating the hinges periodically if they begin to bind.

Wrought Iron

Perforated Mesh vs Wire Mesh

Wire mesh is most commonly used because it is easier to see through and does blocks less heat. Perforated mesh is very rigid and sturdy, but it is a bit harder to see through and tends to block more heat. I only recommend perforated mesh for larger fireplace screens that would otherwise require horizontal support bars when made with wire mesh. Horizontal support bars tend to change the look of a screen and obstruct the view of the fire, so they may be less desireable than perforated mesh.

Note: Hearth Creations outdoor fireplace screens made from 304 stainless steel are only available with perforated mesh.
