Free Standing Glass Screen for Modern Marble Fireplace - Project #21298

Customer Comments: Custom screen for the fireplace, opening dimensions: 37 5/8”W x 27 1/4” H. I recommend glass size to be 1.5” over the opening, total 40 ⅝ W x 28.5” (minus leg height). Legs in natural iron or black finish 1G10 Custom Glass Fireplace Screen Hoping the legs just fade into the dark gray / black stone.

Our Comments: Below are examples of the 1G10 glass screen with the feet in verious finishes. Please be aware that free standing glass screens cannot be set in front of a wood burning fire unless you choose ceramic glass and must be set at least 8" in front of a gas burning fire when burning. Ceramic glass is 3/16" thick with a light amber hue. Unlike tempered glass, it breaks into shards and is not recommended where there are small children or pets present that may knock it over and break it. If you plan on burning real wood, I highly suggest using glass doors instead of a free standing glass screen.

Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures around 450F without shattering and should be at least 8" from the flames. This is sufficient for closing the doors as the fire starts to die out to keep the heat in the home. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures around 1450F with direct flame contact. If you want the ability to burn continuous fires with the doors closed, you need ceramic glass.

This screen uses 4x4x2 solid brass channel feet. The feet are available in a variety of finishes, while satin nickel is featured at half price. The glass is available in standard 1/4" clear, which has a slight green hue. You can upgrade to 3/8" or 1/2" clear glass, 3/8" or 1/2" ultra-clear low-iron glass, which is very clear but has unique aqua marine edges, or 3/16" ceramic glass, which has a light amber hue.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.

Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
