Customer Comments: Hi Greg! Am wanting glass doors. Anything that will help with the smoke smell in the house and look good aesthetically. From the stone on the floor to the top of the fireplace. It's 29inches from the base/lip of the stone piece on the floor. But a little over 31 inches from the floor of the fireplace to the top. The width is 36 inches.
Our Comments: Doors can be made to fit on the outside overlapping the stone, or on the inside. Here are some details about both applications:
Overlap Fit: Fireplace doors have a subframe that extends backwards into the fireplace. The subframe will need to fit inside the smallest width of the opening between the stones. There is a wide mortar joint on the left and right side of the opening that should be covered by the door frame, so the frame will need to be made wide enought to overlap the mortar jount and stil allow the subframe to fit inside. Also, the hearth is irreglar as shown in one of the closeup photos below. An overlapping door will sit on top of the irregular hearth and there will be a gap on the bottom left that will need to be filled with mortar.
Inside fitting door: Doors that fit inside the opening will still need to overlap part of that mortar joint on the sides while the subframe fits inside the inner width of the stones. The gap between the frame and the mortar joint on the sides and stones at the top will need to be filled with mortar. The frame will sit on the firelace floor inside below the hearth and need to be wide enough for the draft assembly to clear the hearth and the doors to open.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures around 450F without shattering and should be at least 8" from the flames. This is sufficient for closing the doors as the fire starts to die out to keep the heat in the home. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures around 1450F with direct flame contact. If you want the ability to burn continuous fires with the doors closed, you need ceramic glass.

These doors are made from laser cut steel. The frames are made to whatever width is needed and can be made to fit inside or overlap the fireplace, except for Option #1, which comes only with a 2" wide frame.

Hand forged by a blacksmith from 1/4" thick solid wrought iron with heavy duty gasketed doors for a tighter seal and maximum draft reduction. Not only are these built to be used, they take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship and tasteful details. These doors are most commonly ordered with ceramic glass for burning fires with the doors closed.

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.
Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
