Customer Comments: Looking for solid brass satin nickel finish to replace old rusted cover removed. Will go over new gas logs. Fire place is 1992 wood burning but little used. The firebox surround and the hearth floor that extends into the room are marble tiles that have cracked. We are doing gas logs so the sparks are not a concern, but young grandkids accessing burning gas logs is. We will fold the doors back and pull the screen shut and let the gas logs burn. This is totally for atmosphere not heating. The damper will be bolted open so we need well fitting doors and vents that close to keep the cold out in winter. I will be replacing them with granite to match other parts of the house. The surround will likely be three pieces and the hearth one.
I had in mind spending $1,000. Don’t know if that is possible. I am interested in satin nickel to pick up nickel elsewhere in the room.
Our Comments: The $1000.00 budget is not nearly enough for solid brass with a nickel finish, which will be at least $6K on the low end. The most affordable alternative that is closer to your budge would be anodized aluminum, which is durable, but does not look like real satin nickel. In the medium price range is nickel plated steel, which will not hold up as well as solid brass or aluminum, but will look fantastic for 5 to 10 years or so.
Gas Log Warning: To prevent the burner and pilot mechanism from overheating causing safety issues, vented gas logs must be burned with glass doors open. Some of the mockups below show the doors closed with the fire burning, which is not correct, but is a limitation of the mockups since most of the gas logs are photographed with the fire burning.

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle relatively high temperatures. The hinges and mounting brackets are made from normal steel, but can be stainless steel as an upgrade.

Nickel plated steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors as they are made from 3/16" thick laser cut steel. Nickel plated steel holds up well indoors, but is susceptible to rust or discoloration in salt air over extended periods of time. The mesh curtains will be made from durable stainless steel painted black.
Option #4: PW Elite Nickel Plated Steel Bifold Fireplace Door in Satin Nickel with Mesh Curtains. Shown with Grand Canyon Lava Series Gas Logs.
These doors are made from 304 stainless steel. This is not marine grade stainless, but it is the next best thing and slightly less expensive than nickel plated solid brass.
Option #5: Hearth Creations Stainless Steel Bifold Fireplace Door in Satin Stainless with Mesh Curtains. Shown with Grand Canyon Arizona Weathered Oak Gas Logs.
These doors are hand crafted by skilled artisans from Solid Brass. Very high end, and very refined. Satin Nickel finishes done on solid brass are the finest quality and most durable nickel finish you can buy. Although this is what you asked for, they are in the $6K to $7K price range, which is well beyond your anticipated $1000.00 budget.
Option #6: Stone Manufacturing SD Nickel Plated Solid Brass Sliding Fireplace Door in Satin Nickel with Stainless Steel Mesh Curtains Painted Black. This door has 2 fixed panes of glass on the right and left sides and 2 sliding panes in the center. Shown with Grand Canyon Lava Series Gas Logs

Shown Above: Grand Canyon 30 Inch Lava Gas Logs with GloFire Technology. These are the only logs on the market with burners cast inside the logs so flames come directly out of the logs themselves. They are by far the most realistic gas logs on the market, but also one of the most expensive.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.
Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
