Customer Comments: We know we want a brass or gold look. Our side tables in the living room have antiqued brass. I don't want it to be too shiny, but don't want it to look almost black either. We need to make sure it sits flush to keep the cat out. We have radiant heat vented gas logs so the heat projects outward so a glass screen would block the heat.
We would like a clean and minimalist look. We only need one cause we will be getting a kitten in the future and don’t want him getting in the fireplace. Our previous cat who recently passed away used it as a litterbox in desperation when our vet wanted to get a urine sample from him and asked us to keep him from using the litterbox until she got here and well, he was desperate and the black rockish stuff looked and moved like litter. LOL!
Our Comments: Below are some examples of free standing screens of various modern designs that can fit flat to the fireplace. Glass doors are the ultimate treatment to keep the cat out and prevent cold air from coming down the chimney, since the damper must be open at all times with your gas logs. You must open the doors when you have the gas one and close the mesh curtains for protection.

Powder coated steel is the most affordable material for free standing screens. Powder coat finishes cannot look like real antique brass, so gold would be the choice.

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.
Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
