Customer Comments: Want a screen with doors for my outdoor fireplace that will protect from wood popping but also be easy to open to add more logs.
Our Comments: Outdoor fireplaces are best treated with screens that are attached to the fireplace for stability in high winds, particularly with taller openings like yours. I have created mockups showing various options for screens with doors that can be made for this application. Glass doors with ceramic glass are the ultimate treatment as you can close the glass doors when it gets windy to continue the fire without smoke and ashes blowing about. They can be made with mesh backup doors for burning with the glass open or closed.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.
Fireplace Opening: Unknown
This type of screen is very unstable when the doors are open, so it must be attached to the fireplace even though it is free standing. This particular model includes clamps that tighten to hold it to the top of the arch inside without drilling.
Option #1: Hearth Creations Stainless Steel Free Standing Arched Outdoor Fireplace Screen with Doors in Black. Includes Mounting Clamps.
Mesh doors that are attached to the fireplace are much sturdier and more durable. These are made from stainless steel or zinc coated wrought iron to better resist rust.
Option #2: Hearth Creations Stainless Steel Arched Outdoor Fireplace Mesh Door in Black.
Option #3: Heavy Duty Hand Crafted Porthouse Zinc Coated Wrought Iron Arched Fireplace Mesh Door in Distressed Black.
Option #4: Luxe Hand Crafted Zinc Coated Inside Fit Wrought Iron Arched Fireplace Mesh Door in Distressed Black.
Option #5: Luxe Hand Crafted Zinc Coated Inside Fit Wrought Iron Arched Fireplace Mesh Door with Scroll Design in Distressed Vintage Iron Powder Coat.
Hand forged by a blacksmith from 1/4" thick solid wrought iron and ceramic glass, these doors will prevent smoke and ashes from blowing around when it gets windy. They also allow you to safely let the fire die out without worry and help keep rain out of the fireplace during the winter season.
Option #6: Hand Crafted Zinc Coated Wrought Iron Bifold Arched Fireplace Door in Burnished Black with Ceramic Glass and Heavy Duty Gate Mesh Backup Doors.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.
Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
