Custom Fireplace Doors Made To Fit a Mediterranian Style Fireplace - Project #21084

Customer Comments: Hi Greg, Thank you again for taking my call earlier. We’re working on a restaurant project here in San Diego and are looking to install a permanently fixed fireplace screen. The fireplace opening measures approximately 30” tall by 42” wide, and we’re aiming for a simple, clean design that integrates well with the space. Could you provide a rough cost estimate for something like this? It would also be helpful if you could share any examples of similar installations or recommendations on materials, mounting methods, or design approaches that would work best in a commercial setting. Appreciate your guidance, and I look forward to your thoughts. Thank you,

Our Comments: Here are some options to consider made from steel and wrought iron. The wrought iron screens shown with a Camel Back arch can also be made to the shape of the fireplace. I just cannot create mockups to show this. I did include an example of a screen made that way so you can get the idea.

Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.

Gas Log Warning: To prevent the burner and pilot mechanism from overheating causing safety issues, vented gas logs must be burned with glass doors open. The Modern-1 door is an exception to this rule as it can be made with a special Gas Log AirWash system that allows you to close the doors while burning a vented gas logs. Vent Free gas logs cannot have glass doors closed under any circumstances. Read more below.

Before:

Medium to High-End Steel Doors

Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.

Flat Steel
Flat Steel Fireplace Door Option #1: Hearth Creations Flat Steel Fireplace Glass Mesh in Matte Black. This would be installed behind the mantel with a wide frame at the top. Shown with black iron 3/4" bar contour grate.

High End Hand Forged Wrought Iron Glass Doors

Hand forged by a blacksmith from 1/4" thick solid wrought iron with heavy duty gasketed doors for a tighter seal and maximum draft reduction. Not only are these built to be used, they take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship and tasteful details. The forging process produces a unique texture that you cannot get with laser cut steel and there are added hammered textures that can be for a more rustic applications. These doors are often used for extremely large fireplaces because of their heavy duty solid frame and hinges. They are commonly ordered with ceramic glass for buring hot fires with the doors closed.

Wrought Iron
Wrought Iron Fireplace Door Option #2: Hand Crafted Wrought Iron Bifold Fireplace Glass Door in Burnished Black with Tempered or Ceramic Glass and Mesh Curtains. Shown with black iron 3/4" bar contour grate.

Ultra High End Hand Forged Gate Doors

These gate doors are made using an angle iron on the top and sides that is bolted to the fireplace with hinges for the doors. The doors can be made with the camel back arch as shown, or can be shaped to fit the curves of the mantel. Unfortuantely, I cannot create mockups showing the doors matching the mantel, so I included an example of one that was done that way.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.

Glass Options

Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.

Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
