Spark Protection for Outdoor Fireplace - Project #20940

Customer Comments: I am looking for a fireplace screen for my outdoor fireplace. It is large.....and sparks keep flying out and burning our rugs and furniture. I would like it to have doors so I can open to add wood. Thank you.

Our Comments: There are a variety of choices to help reduce or prevent sparks from flying out of your outdoor fireplace. The ultimate solution would be glass doors with ceramic glass that give you the ability to burn fires with the doors closed when it gets windy. Wire mesh doors are your second best choice, with mesh curtains being a third option. I have created mockups, including each of these.

Outdoor Fireplace Materials: Materials designed specifically for outdoor fireplaces will be stainless steel or zinc coated wrought iron. Both of these can be very expensive. Many of my customers seek a balance between price and durability. For example, aluminum holds up well outdoors, but some of the hardware and hinges will eventually rust. Some manufacturers offer an expensive outdoor option that includes stainless steel hardware to overcome this issue, while others may not. Zinc coated wrought holds up well, but the gate mesh or mesh curtains get very expensive in stainless steel and some people will choose normal steel for those components and replace them periodicallly. I will provide pricing for various options so you can find the right balance for you.

Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.

Mesh Doors

Mesh doors provide excellent spark protection and can be made from a variety of meterials. Stainless steel mesh is optional and can be expensive, particularly when it is 316 marine grade. Some people will choose to use normal steel mesh and replace it periodically.

Glass Doors

Each of these doors can be made with a variety of materials that affect the durability outdoors. Glass doors with ceramic glass are the ultimate treatment for outdoor fireplaces because they allow you to close the fireplace off when it gets windy to prevent smoke and sparks from blowing around. Doors with tempered can be closed when the fire is dying out.

High End Hand Forged Wrought Iron Doors

Hand forged by a blacksmith from 1/4" thick zinc coated wrought iron, these doors are very heavy duty. They do not have the option for stainless steel hardware, so the hinges will require periodic lubrication in outdoor applications. The option for stainless mesh is expensive and some people will use standard mesh and replace it periodically. These doors are commonly ordered with ceramic glass for buring hot fires with the doors closed.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
