Customer Comments: Fireplace is 33 1/2 wide 38 1/4 deep 22 inches high from stone to metal frame Looking for (glass) enclosure ideas. Black frame.
Our Comments: Below are glass doors that can be made to fit your fireplace, considering the post locations. I am showing options in 3 materials: Aluminum, Flat Steel and Wrought Iron. I have included further details about each of the materials below.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.
Fireplace Opening: 38 1/4" W (Long Sides) x 33 1/2" W (Short Side) x 22" H (Lintel) x 3/4" to Posts
Aluminum is the least expensive material for fireplace doors. It is not as heavy duty as the other options, but it is much more affordable. These are made with open glass-to-glass corners for a full view of the fireplace and posts. Some find this appealing, while others would rather not see the posts. These doors cannot be made with ceramic glass and it is recommended you burn fires with the doors open on both of the long sides. You cannot burn fires with one side open and the other closed. The short side must have a cabinet door or two fixed glass panes.
Option #1: Design Specialties Stiletto Aluminum U-Shaped 3-Sided Fireplace Door in Black with Tempered Glass (Only) and Gate Mesh Backup Doors. Shown with Fullview Bifold Doors on the Long Sides and Cabinet Doors on the Short Side.
Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are made from 3/16" solid steel and can have tempered or ceramic glass. When made with ceramic glass, each glass pane must be fully framed, as shown in Option #3. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, you need ceramic glass. These doors are not made with open glass corners and will hide the posts.
Option #2: Hearth Creations Flat Steel U-Shaped 3-Sided Fireplace Glass Door in Black with Tempered Glass (Only) and Gate Mesh Backup Doors. Shown with Fullview Bifold Doors on the Long Sides and Fixed Glass on the Short Side.
Option #3: Hearth Creations Flat Steel U-Shaped 3-Sided Fireplace Glass Door in Black with Tempered or Ceramic Glass and Gate Mesh Backup Doors. Shown with Framed Bifold Doors on the Long Sides and Fixed Glass on the Short Side.
Hand forged by a blacksmith from 1/4" thick solid wrought iron with heavy duty gasketed doors for a tighter seal and maximum draft reduction. Not only are these built to be used, they take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship and tasteful details. They can be made with fullview tempered or ceramic glass. Because the ceramic glass does not need to be fully framed, they are more often ordered with ceramic glass than the steel doors. These doors are not made with open glass corners and will hide the posts.
Option #4: Hand Crafted Wrought Iron U-Shaped 3-Sided Fireplace Door in Burnished Black with Tempered or Ceramic Glass and Heavy Duty Gate Mesh Backup Doors. Shown with Fullview Bifold Doors on the Long Sides and Fixed Glass on the Short Side.
The high-end mesh curtains have a special "Track and Roller System" that always glides smoothly and does not bind over the years like typical screens that have a steel curtain rod. Because the posts are so close to the corner, there will be three separate header bars with their own mesh.
Option #5: High-End Sliding Mesh Curtains with three separate Top and Bottom Bars in Black. Uses Smooth Gliding Track and Roller System.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.
Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
