Customer Comments: Need help with fireplace doors for 2 sided wood burning fireplace. Looking for cabinet style doors and mesh doors. Yard side 31-1/2” tall 39-1/2” wide Deck side: 40” wide 32” tall
Our Comments: Here are examples of cabinet style doors that can be made for outdoor fireplaces. Each door has its advantages and disadvantages..
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. Ceramic glass can also handle high levels of thermal shock, which tempered glass cannot. This is critical for outdoor applications where it can be very cold outside the fireplace and very hot inside, which causes thermal shock when the doors are closed. If you wish to burn fires with one side open and the other side closed, or both sides closed, you must have ceramic glass, especially with see-through fireplaces in outdoor applications.
Fireplace Opening (Side 1 - Deck Side): 40" W x 32" H
Fireplace Opening (Side 2 - Yard Side): 39 1/2" W x 31 1/2" H
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.
Option #1 (Deck Side): Hearth Creations Profile-2 Aluminum Cabinet Outdoor Fireplace Door in Black with Tempered Glass (Only) and Gate Mesh Backup Doors.
Pros & Cons: This door is made specifically for outdoor applications and includes stainless steel hinges and hardware, but it cannot be made with ceramic glass.
Option #2 (Deck Side): PW Creekside Aluminum Cabinet Fireplace Door in Black with Tempered or Ceramic Glass and Gate Mesh Backup Doors.
Pros & Cons: Not specifically made for outdoors. The powder coated aluminum frame holds up well outdoors, but the hinges and hardware are not stainless steel and may need to be lubricated and replaced periodically. However, it can be made with fullview ceramic glass.
Stainless Steel is designed specifically for outdoor applications. It is much more heavy duty than aluminum, but can be 2-3 times the price. These are available with both tempered or ceramic glass. When made with ceramic glass, the doors must be fully framed as shown in the mockups below. Tempered glass can be made without the center frames.
Option #3 (Deck Side): Hearth Creations Stainless Steel Framed Cabinet Outdoor Fireplace Door in Matte Black with Tempered or Ceramic Glass and Gate Mesh Backup Doors.
Pros & Cons: Designed specifically for outdoor applications. Can be made with ceramic glass. Is much more expensive than aluminum.
Hand forged by a blacksmith from 1/4" thick solid wrought iron with heavy duty frame and hinges. Not only are these built to be used, they take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship and tasteful details. The forging process produces a unique texture that you cannot get with laser cut steel and there are added hammered textures that can be for a more rustic applications. These doors are often used with see-through fireplaces because they can be made with fullview ceramic glass and have such heavy duty construction. Although the hardware is not stainless steel, a zinc primer and UV coating are used for added durability in outdoor applications.
Option #4 (Deck Side): Hand Crafted Pacifico Wrought Iron Cabinet Fireplace Door in Burnished Black with Tempered or Ceramic Glass and Single Heavy Duty Gate Mesh Backup Doors.
These doors are as rugged as they get. Although they do not have stainless steel hardware, the heavy duty construction, Zinc Primer and UV coating make them an excellent choice for outdoor applications. The clearview ceramic glass along with heavy duty single gate mesh backup door allow for a clear view of the fire with the doors open or closed, which is the most desireable combination of features. The wider frame covers the imperfections on the stone, but it can be made with a narrower frame if so desired. Only downside is the price, these are quite expensive.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.
Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
