Glass Doors with Ceramic Glass for Small Arched Fireplace - Project #20876

Customer Comments: Glass doors for two small arched fireplaces.

Our Comments: Here are the mockups I have created for you in our email exchange, along with the instructions for making the templates.

Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.

Fireplace Opening: Templates to be provided

High End Hand Forged Wrought Iron Doors

Hand forged by a blacksmith from 1/4" thick solid wrought iron with heavy duty gasketed doors for a tighter seal and maximum draft reduction. Not only are these built to be used, they take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship and tasteful details. The forging process produces a unique texture that you cannot get with laser cut steel and there are added hammered textures that can be for a more rustic applications. These doors are commonly ordered with ceramic glass for buring hot fires with the doors closed because they can be made without a center frame on the glass for a clear view of the fire.

The wide bottom allows the hinges to clear the protruding bricks a the bottom so the doors can fold flat against the bricks on the sides when open.

The square doors allow the use of mesh curtains that can remain pulled back for a clear view of the fire when the doors are closed.

Template Instructions

Template
Fireplace Template Template Phase #1:
  1. Cut a piece of cardboard (or other rigid material) the width of the arched bricks a little taller than the opening.
  2. Cut a rectangular hole in the cardboard as shown in the example.
  3. Set the carboard against the bricks so it hits the top arch and bottom bricks.
  4. Reach inside and draw the shape of the arch at the top and the protruding bricks at the bottom.
Template
Fireplace Template Template Phase #2:
  1. Cut the cardbard on the lines you drew. Cut on the inside of the line so you end up cutting the line off completely. This will allow the template to fit inside.
  2. Set the template against the fireplace again, but this time it should go all the way back under the arch where the sides are flat with the bricks on the sides.
  3. If you cannot get it to go inside, trim it just a little to make it work. It is best to trim it rather than force it, which bends the cardboard edges.
  4. Reach inside and draw the sides of the fireplace opening on the back of the cardboard.
  5. Take a picture of the template while it is in place and email that to me for approval.
Template
Fireplace Template Template Phase #3:
  1. Remove the template from the fireplace.
  2. On the back side, you should have two vertical lines as shown above.
  3. Mark the template as shown above. Make sure it says "Inside Looking Out".
  4. I will give you the PO# for each fireplace once you have placed the order

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
