Our Comments: Below is a mockup of the door you requested along with some other mockups showing doors I recommend. There are a couple of stones that protrude much further into your fireplace opening than the others. This will create wide gap between the frame and the stones, so the door cannot be installed to look like the inspiration photo you provided. I recommend using a detachable surround or frame for this application. I have included examples and details of how this works below. Another option is to have a mason cut the protruding stones more even with the others. Doing so is a very dusty mess and will leave raw edges on the cut stones that may not be appealing.
Gas Log Warning: It is unsafe to operate a ventless gas log with glass doors closed. You MUST open the glass doors when the logs are burning, othewise the glass will explode.
Fireplace Opening: 38 3/8" W x 28 1/16" to 28 7/16" H
Aluminum is the least expensive material for fireplace doors. I do not necessarily recommend this door for this application, but have included it at your request.
Option #1: Hearth Craft Rainbow Aluminum Bifold Fireplace Door in Black with Clear Glass and Gate Mesh Backup Doors. This door has thinner 3/16" glass, compared to 1/4" thick glass from other doors. I do not recommend this door, but have presented it since it is the door you sent to me as an example of what you liked.
Option #2: Stiletto Aluminum Bifold Fireplace Door in Black with Clear Glass and Single Gate Mesh Backup Door and Child Safety Clips. This door has 1/4" thick glass with child safety clips to prevent children from opening the doors. I recommend this door if you wish to do the mortar in application.
The Detachable Surround comes in 4 pieces that are bolted together from the back side. This allows you to assemble it inside the fireplace behind the stone. It then gets attached to the bricks inside the fireplace using L-Brackets and masonry sinkers. The glass door then overlaps the surround trim. This eliminates the need for mortaring in the door and is particularly desireable with stone fireplaces where there are several stones that protrude further into the opening than others, as is the case with this fireplace.
Option #3: PW Pendleton Aluminum Bifold Fireplace Door with Detachable Surround Trim in Black with Clear Glass and Single Gate Mesh Backup Door. The detachable surround trim gets installed behind the stone and the door overlaps the trim opening. (See trim example below).
The detachable frame is similar to the detachable trim, except it is the actual door frame with hinges that is assembled behind the stone. This creates a much more integrated-finished look. The doors are hand forged by a blacksmith from 1/4" thick solid wrought iron for those who appreciate fine craftsmanship and tasteful details. The forging process produces a unique texture and finish you cannot get with steel or aluminum doors.
Option #4: Hand Crafted Olde World Wrought Iron Fireplace Door with Detachable Frame in Hammered Medium Bronze with Clear Glass and Heavy Duty Gate Mesh Backup Doors.
Option #5: Hand Crafted Pacifico Wrought Iron Single Gate Mesh Fireplace Door with Detachable Frame in Burnished Natural Iron. Shown with Custom Latch.
The detachable frame allows you to piece together the door frame inside the fireplace behind the facing. This is particularly useful for rock or ledger stone fireplaces where the stones are too irregular to consider fitting the door inside the stones and filling the gaps with mortar. This is available with the Hand Crafted wrought iron doors only.
Hi Greg,
I'm interested in getting a quote and mock up from you for custom glass doors for my living room fireplace.
Right now my fireplace is wide open with a gas log setup. I just had new logs installed. My main concern is that I have autistic twin boys and I would love it if I could somehow lock the fireplace doors - even if I can somehow add the lock on the handles separately, to prevent them from easily opening the doors and touching the logs, controls etc. when I am out of the room.
I *think* our fireplace has an irregular stone facing with a lowered hearth. I have included a ton of pictures of our fireplace (inside and outside) and the living room. I also added a couple photos of some modern glass doors I found online that I like the look of made by Design Specialties. I like a clean, simple, modern look. I'm leaning towards a black or dark brown finish but honestly I am open to suggestions. I don't usually like extremely shiny materials. Brushed is more my style.
I don't *think* I want a mesh curtain. Unless you feel a mesh curtain would be a good idea. We had one in a previous home that had a wood burning fireplace, glass doors and mesh curtain. That was before the kids. We didn't use the mess curtain much because it got so hot and was hard to pull back and forth.
If you'd prefer to talk by phone my cell is: (removed). I have never ordered anything like this before and I'm quite nervous. My plan is to have a friend of mine who is a local home builder / general contractor install the doors once they arrive.
The fireplace measurements are below. The measurements for the top of the fireplace where the stone facing abuts the lintel bar are included in the photos. I drew a picture with measurements and the photo is called "unnamed". If you have questions please let me know.
I look forward to speaking with you about the quote and mock ups.
Thank you,
Fig #1 - Example of door (provided by customer). This is the door I presented in Option #1, but not necessarily recommended.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.

Photo #2: With your back to the fireplace, take a picture looking straight out into the room so we can see the decor directly in front of the fireplace.
