Glass Doors for Gas Fireplace Remodel - Project #20854

Customer Comments: Looking for doors that I can open weather accordion style or sliding. Don’t know the manufacturer of our prefabricated gas fireplace. The glass that is on there now with the gold trim is held in place by 4 nipples on the corners that I have to angle/ lift up to take off. Dimensions are width 42 5/8 height: 26 3/16

Our Comments: The first option is the least expensive and is designed to overlap the existing black frame 1/2" and requires drilling in the metal for installation. The other 3 doors are made to cover the black frame completely and attach with strong magnets, so there is no installation required. The last option is the only one that can be closed when burning the gas logs, the others must be open.

Affordable Aluminum Doors

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.

Brookfield

Option #1: Design Specialties Aluminum Brookfield Bifold Fireplace Door in Black with Clear Glass. This door overlaps the black metal frame 1/2", leaving the rest exposed.

Medium to High-End Steel Doors

Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.

Gas Log AirWash System

Glass doors normally must be open when burning a gas log in order to prevent the pilot mechanism from overheating. These doors have a special Gas Log AirWash system that feeds enough cooling air into the fireplace minimize overheating and allow you to burn your gas logs with the doors closed.

Modern-1 Frame: The Modern-1 has a unique design that allows it to be made without handles. The left photo shows the Modern-1 in Satin Nickel with a hidden back frame. The middle is a side view showing how the doors stand out about 1" from the back frame. The right photo shows a wide back frame (not hidden) with slots for the optional AirWash system that allows air to flow freely into the fireplace so you can burn fires with the doors closed. Keep in mind, these slots are always open, so they are less tightly sealed than other doors.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
