Gasket Sealed Glass Doors for Large Stone Fireplace - Project #20838

Customer Comments: The fireplace is customized and if you look at the bluestone on the left and right side, it kind of jet into the fire box a little horizontally left to right I had some ideas on how to deal with it, but most importantly it needs to be airtight. Is this something you install or I install? Do you come out to measure or do I measure? Also I like the featured example in Iron Age 4, but I like the ring handles on the doors.

Our Comments: The ring handles are not available on the Iron Age 4 door, they are only come with the Hand Crafted Wrought Iron doors. I have created mockups showing several options with the ring handles. To accomodate the bluestone ledge, the outer frame of the door needs to be wide enough to allow the hinges to be inside the ledge. When the doors are open, you must be careful not to bang them on the ledge. One of the options shows an extra wide bottom frame that allows the doors to open above the ledge.

Gasket Sealed Doors: The doors below are heavy duty with gasket sealed doors. They are not completely air tight, but come about as close as you can get.

Installation: I do not measure and install, most of my customers do it themselves. Those who are not handy hire a handyman or have a contractor on the job. Regarding how to measure and install, I will walk you through it, but you can read the details on this page: Fireplace Doors for Rock Fireplaces

Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.

High End Hand Forged Wrought Iron Doors

Hand forged by a blacksmith from 1/4" thick solid wrought iron with heavy duty gasketed doors for a tight seal and maximum draft reduction. Not only are these built to be used, they take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship and tasteful details. The forging process produces a unique texture that you cannot get aluminum or steel and there are added hammered textures that can used be for a more rustic applications. These doors are often used for large fireplaces because of their heavy duty solid frame and hinges. They are commonly ordered with ceramic glass for buring hot fires with the doors closed.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
