Insulated Steel Mantel to Protect TV Over Gas Fireplace - Project #20834

Customer Comments: We need a Custom Insulated Plain Metal Shelf (mantel) in Black color or White Oak/Wood color to act as a heat dissipator/barrier between the gas fireplace and TV to be installed just above the mantel. Dimensions of the mantel should be 72"L x 4"H x 8"D. Pls let us know your cost and time to deliver.

1. Install the mantel max 6" above the fireplace. So the height of the (lower end of the mantel) from the floor would be 29".
2. Install the TV almost flush with the mantel, leaving a small gap of say 2" between the mantel and the base of the TV.
3. Is black the best color for the mantel or would you suggest any other color based on the room.

Our Comments: The manufacturer of the steel shelves does not recommend installing the mantel closer than 12", otherwise is likely to be discoloration from heat. If you do place the mantel closer to the opening, I suggest using the Antique Black finish, which will show less discoloration. With that said, you should check the installation instructions for your gas fireplace to make sure a non-combustible shelf or ledge is allowed that close to the fireplace. In many cases, there is a restriction to prevent the fireplace itself from overheating or from excessive heat transfer to the wall above the fireplace. Therefore, I recommend placing the mantel 12" above the opening instead of 6". The mockups below show both heights.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
