Customer Comments: 76.5" wide 36" high at the center down to 28" high This is a mountain home owned by a large multi-generational family - some members are more attentive than others. The fire grate is in the center of the fireplace and is 36" wide. We have talked about doing a three piece screen with two sides and an overlapping center screen that would allow for easy access. (See photo 3) but that may be too fussy. We are really looking for safe and simple. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks.
Our Comments: Here are some unique options that I have designed specifically for large fireplaces like yours. Hope this helps.
Fireplace Opening: 76 1/2" W x 36" H (Center) x 28" H (Sides)
Mesh doors that are attached to the fireplace will be the most convenient and provide maximum spark protection.
Option #1: PW Revelation Arched Cabinet Fireplace Mesh Door with Fixed Side Panels. Shown with WI-AN9 Closeout Special Wrought Iron Liege Andirons.
The bowed spark guard with mesh doors is an original design by Fireplace Treatments. This unique free standing fireplace screen features curved sides with flate wire mesh and a functional cabinet door in the center. Brackets would be provided to attach the screen to the firebricks inside the fireplace on the sides for stability.
The bowed spark guard with mesh curtains is another original design by Fireplace Treatments. This free standing fireplace screen features curved sides with flate wire mesh and a sliding mesh curtains in the center. Brackets would be provided to attach the screen to the firebricks inside the fireplace on the sides for stability.
This Olde World style curved screen wraps around the fireplace grate to provide excellent spark protection without the need to cover the enitre fireplace opening. The depth of the screen will be limited by the location of the gas log lighter.
This ultra-high-end Gothic fireplace screen is likely overkill for this particular application, but I just had to show it for others who may need something like this in a more medevil setting. The screen has wire mesh on the side panels with mesh curtains in the center.
Option #5: Hand Crafted Gothic Wrought Iron 3-Fold Screen with Mesh Curtains in Natural Iron. Shown with Closeout Special WI-AN10 Andirons.
The Boston Spark Guard is the least expensive alternative for this application. These can be made up to 10" deep to set inside the fireplace in front of the grate. They are light-weight and easy to move.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
