Customer Comments: Hi Fireplace Treatments, I’m reaching out to see if you could help us with a custom electric fireplace insert. We have had 2 electrical fireplaces that we bought from Lowes and ran into a few issues that we hope a custom design could fix. These were just off the shelf and not specific to our fireplace. Both have died by no longer providing heat. We believe this may be due to lack of use that caused dust to build up (and possibly dog hair). The last insert I bought was Cost Way Electric Log heater.
We have multiple dogs, and because we only use the fireplace a couple of months a year (we live in Southern California), the fans often get blocked, which causes the unit to shut off. We’re hoping a custom insert could prevent that.
We’re not looking for anything too fancy or expensive. Our outlet is located just outside to the right of the fireplace, and we’d like to connect the unit to a smart plug without overloading the circuit.
I have attached a couple of pictures of the current setup. Could you let us know if a custom insert would be possible, and what kind of estimate we might be looking at? Any suggestions for a pet-friendly setup would be much appreciated. Thanks so much for your time, and we look forward to your thoughts!
Our Comments: I believe the electric inserts shown below will resolve your issue since the working components would be hidden inside the fireplace protected by the surround trim. However, these are a lot more expensive than what they sell at the home centers, but they have a lot more features and much more realistic flames.

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.
Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
