Customer Comments: No decor in front of fireplace / new construction Looking for matte black finish, freestanding 49” wide, 40” tall
Our Comments: Here are some options including free standing screens and attached doors. It appears that the floor inside the fireplace is raised slightly higher than the hearth. This can cause issues with the rear stabilizers and may require the screen to stand out about 6" in front of the fireplace. For this reason, I have provided some other alternatives to consider.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.
Fireplace Opening: 49" W x 40" H
The rear stabilizers may hit the fireplace floor and prevent the screen from fitting flush against the fireplace as shown. If this is the case, I recommend making the screen 3" overlap the opening 3" on the top and each side as shown in Option #2B. An alternative is to cut a groove into the fireplace floor for each of the rear stabilizers, allowing the screen to set flat against the fireplace.

A bowed fireplace screen does not need rear stabilizers to stand on its own, making this an excellent choice for a single panel free standing screen. This example can also be made in plain black with no vertical bars or rivets.

A framed fireplace screen with sliding mesh curtains is an excellent choice for this fireplace. Unlike a free standing screen, you simply slide the mesh open and closed when tending the fire rather than having to set the screen on the floor off to the side. The bottom frame also helps prevent ashes and logs from rolling out of the fireplace.
Option #5: Framed Fireplace Screen with Mesh Curtains in Black. Shown with Custom Wrought Iron Wing Grate and 18041 Fireplace Tools.
Mesh fireplace doors are not only very convenient, they provide excellent spark protection. These are made to fit the opening and can be desgined to attach with pressure screws (no drilling is required).
Option #6: Elegant Steel Mesh Fireplace Door in Black. Shown with Custom Fireplace MCM Grill/Grate and 18404 Fireplace Tools.
Glass doors are the ultimate treatment for this fireplace. With ceramic glass and gate mesh backup doors, you have the most flexibility possible for burning fires with the doors open or closed. Glass doors not only offer the best protection from spark and smoke, the help keep cold drafts from coming into the home through the chimney. This is particularly important after building a fire and leaving the damper open all night as the fire dies out. Just close the doors and let the fire die out safely while keeping the heat in your home.
Hand crafted doors take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship tasteful details. These doors are the most heavy duty made from 3/16" and 1/4" thick solid hand forged wrought iron.
Option #7: Elegant Steel Cabinet Fireplace Door with Window Pane Design, Tempered or Ceramic Glass and Gate Mesh Backup Doors in Burnished Black. Shown with Custom Fireplace MCM Grill/Grate and 18404 Fireplace Tools.
Option #8: Hand Crafted Wrought Iron Gasket Sealed Bifold Fireplace Door in Burnished Black with Tempered or Ceramic Glass and Gate Mesh Backup Doors. Shown with Custom Fireplace MCM Grill/Grate and 18404 Fireplace Tools.
Free standing fireplace screens are normally made with back feet or rear stabilizers to allow the screen to stand on its own when you set it aside to tend the fire, or in cases where you want the screen to fit inside the fireplace opening.
Normally, we suggest making a free standing screen 1" larger than the opening on the top and each side so it can fit flat against the fireplace opening for the best spark protection. When a fireplace opening is raised off the ground, the rear stabilizers will prevent the screen from fitting flat against the fireplace causing it to stand out 3" to 6" in front of the opening. In such cases, we recommend having the screen made least 3" wider on the top and each side than the fireplace opening to help prevent sparks from popping out.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
