Mesh Curtains and Glass Doors for Corner Fireplace - Project #20760

Customer Comments: Hello Before we get a formal design and quote going, please provide a ballpark cost for a typical corner fireplace. Will be a black finish. Thank you.

Our Comments: Subsequent to our email conversation, here are some mockups showing how the fireplace can be treated with mesh curtains and glass doors. These applications assume the post is less than 1 1/2" from the corner. If the post is further away, the mesh curtain can be done in a single piece wraping around the post and other doors may work.

Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.

Affordable Aluminum Doors

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.

Hand crafted doors take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship tasteful details. These doors are the most heavy duty made from 1/4" thick solid hand forged wrought iron and designed for constant use.

Bar and Mesh

The header bar with mesh curtains is the least expensive treatement for corner fireplaces. If the post is in the way, each side is treated separately with the header bars butting into the post. If the post is more than 1 1/2" from the front, we can do a single L-Shaped header bar with the mesh wrapping around the post, but this does not appear likely, so I am showing two separate bars. The bottom bar helps prevent logs and ashes from rolling out onto the hearth.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
