Customer Comments: Opening is 38 7/8 x 26 3/16. Need to reduce the opening a bit because of smoke issues. Seeking to do this with frame from either doors or inset screen. House decor is craftsman style.
Our Comments: We have several ways of reducing the opening size. Use a fireplace door with a wider frame, add a surround trim with a mesh curtain or fireplace door or add a smoke guard to the back side of a fireplace door frame so it is relatively hidden. I have created examples of each of these in the mockups below.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.
Fireplace Opening: 38 7/8" W x 26 3/19" H
Aluminum is the least expensive material for making fireplace doors. The frames are made by assembling mitered pieces of extruded aluminum, very much like a picture frame. To reduce the size of the opening we must either choose the widest extrusion or add a steel surround behind the door.

Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.

Hand crafted doors take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship tasteful details. These doors are the most heavy duty made from 1/4" thick solid hand forged wrought iron. The frame can be made wider to reduce the opening size, or a hidden smoke guard can be added to the back of the frame to create the illusion that the fireplace opening has not been altered.

Option #10: Hand Crafted Wrought Iron Fireplace Surround with Mesh Curtains Door in Medium Bronze. Choose Which Texture You Want on the Surround.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
