Customer Comments: I want a clear glass enclosure for my open 3-sided masonry wood-burning fireplace with minimal metal trim. I think I only want the dining room side operable and the others solid fixed glass. Two doors preferred vs. the 4 door folding style. The enclosure can be screwed to the exposed rail on the top just below the stone veneer. The right rail on the dining side and the left rail on the living room side can be enlarged by 3/4” so that I can scribe them to the vertical stone veneer for a tighter fit. I trust you will use the high temperature tolerant glass, not the tempered? Any suggestions you have to make the fireplace vertical metal support posts less visible behind your enclosure?
Our Comments: There are two basic options for multi-sided doors that can be made with ceramic glass. Aluminum doors are the least expensive and will have open glass to glass corners. Wrought Iron or Steel doors are made with framed corners that help hide the posts. We can add mesh curtains to each side to help hide the posts even better. I have created mockups illustrating both types.
Operational Doors: I highly recommend making the doors operable on both of the long sides. Single panes of ceramic glass that are large are too easy to break. Plus, it will add symetry to the look.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable. These are built with glass to glass corners and will not hide the posts. Mesh curtains may not work depending on how close the posts are to the corners. In both cases, the door may need to stand out from the top black header in order to clear the posts. Rather than scribing the frame into the stone, it is best to simply fill the gaps with mortar as shown in the mockups.

Hand crafted doors take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship tasteful details. These doors are the most heavy duty made from 3/16" and 1/4" thick solid hand forged wrought iron. Cabinet doors on the long side with a fixed glass panel on the end. The frame can be custom made at the corners with mesh curtans to help hide the posts as shown in the mockup.
Option #2: Hand Crafted Wrought Iron Peninsula Fireplace Door in Burnished Black with Tempered or Ceramic Glass. Wide End Frames and Mesh Curtains to Hide Posts. Cabinet Doors on the Long Sides with Fixed Glass on the End.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
