Customer Comments: Hi Greg, We are looking to improve the usability of our fireplace. It is open on two sides and does not get great suction from the chimney. We barely use it because the house gets too smoky. We want something that blends in and keeps the mid-century look, as our historic home was built in 1957. Initially, we considered adding just one glass panel inside the fireplace (perpendicular) to block off the one open side, but we aren't sure if that is feasible. Open to ideas!
Our Comments: Well, your fireplace does present some design challenges. I have 3 ideas for you as illustrated below. Option #3 with ceramic glass is my ultimate recommended fireplace treatment, if you can afford it. The challenge for a corner glass door is getting around the post and returning to the side without leaving a gap at the top like there is with your current bar and mesh.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.

Rather than having a fixed glass panel attached to the fireplace, we can make a free standing ceramic glass screen that can potentially help block the airflow that causes the fireplace to smoke. This is not a sure way of fixing the issue, but you can test it by standing a piece of plywood or sheet metal on the left side and building a fire to see if there is a difference. If the test works, this is a viable option.
This door can be made to the shape of the entire corner. Aluminum is a more affordable material for doors made like this, but cannot be made with ceramic glass.
Option #2: Design Specialties Aluminum Brookfield Bifold Corner Fireplace Door in Black with Tempered Glass and Mesh Curtains.
This is the ultimate fireplace treatment for your application. Jogging around the corner in this manner allows the left side to cover the gap at the top tha will help prevent smoke from spilling into the room. The doors are gasket sealed to help eliminate smoke and drafts. If made with ceramic glass, you can burn fires with the closed on both sides, or open on the main side and closed on the left side. This will give you more complete control over the fire to reduce or elimnate the smoke issues. The wrought iron material is heavy duty and can best handle the heat when burning fires with the doors closed.
Option #3: Hand Crafted Wrought Iron Corner Fireplace Door with Special Jogged Corner in Burnished Black with Tempered or Ceramic Glass and Gate Mesh Backup Doors. Made with Tight Fitting Gasket Sealed Doors to Reduce Smoke. Bifold Doors on Right Side and Cabinet Doors or Fixed Pane on the Left.
This smoke guard would be made from 3/16" thick solid steel with a steel angle iron base that would be bolted to the floor inside the fireplace behind the mesh curtains.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
