Customer Comments: Thinking about two mesh curtains if high-quality option is available for size of the opening. I had thought about mesh doors but with each door being 27 inches wide I suspect there would be a substantial vertical bar in the line of sight to the fire. I have gas logs in another fireplace and find that the mesh screen actually makes the fire more realistic. These logs actually produce enough heat to take the chill out of the air during Florida winters – glass doors would block the heat from the room. Any thoughts you may have would be appreciated.
Our Comments: I understand your concern about the vertical obstruction with mesh doors, which would be true. Often times, this is the reason people will choose glass doors or mesh curtains over mesh doors.
Glass doors can be made with mesh curtains behind the glass. Aside from the look, the intent of glass doors when used with gas logs is to minimize heat loss from the fireplace. Because the damper must be propped open permanently when gas logs are installed, there is a constant draft coming down or going up the chimney as if a window has been left open year-around. Glass doors block this draft when the logs are not in use. When you turn the gas on, you must open the glass doors and close the mesh curtains to enjoy the fire. The Modern-1 glass door is the only one that you can burn gas logs with the doors closed, allowing you to enjoy your when it is not so cold and you do not want the heat.

These high end mesh curtains feature solid brass construcdtion and incorporate an I-Beam track and roller system that glides smoothly. I-Beam systems are particularly desireable for larger fireplaces because they are very rigid and remain straight. Typical steel curtain rods will sag over the time and the mesh will eventually start to drag. See the illustration lower on this page.
Free standing screens allow you to have a full unobstructed view of the fire and are easier to see through than mesh curtains.
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.
Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.
The I-Beam Track and Roller system is specifically designed for large fireplaces, typically over 48" wide or tall. The I-Beam is rigid and does not sag under the weight of the mesh like a typical mesh curtain rod. It is installed in the same manner as a normal bar and mesh except that instead of having rings that loop over a curtain rod, there are rollers that slide onto the track.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
