Glass Doors for Small 36" Fireplace - Project #20711

Customer Comments: I live in a classic, but updated home, in which I'd like to replace the metal curtains with a framed glass door to my "smallish" fireplace for a more finished look. Dimensions are 36"w X 20"h at the opening. My goal is to find an enclosure with operable doors that looks sleek and maybe hides hinges.

Our Comments: This is a zero clearance or prefabricated fireplace built into your home with 2x4 construction. Prefabricated fireplaces like this require special fireplace doors that allows air into the fireplace to keep it cool so it does not overheat the wood framing around it. Here are a few doors that are made for this purpose. The last option does not have any visible handles or hinges.

Fireplace Opening: 36" W x 20" H

Affordable Aluminum Doors

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.

Medium to High-End Steel Doors

Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.

Modern-1 Flat Steel Fireplace Door Modern-1 Frame: The Modern-1 has a unique design that allows it to be made without handles. The left photo shows the Modern-1 in Satin Nickel with a hidden back frame. The middle is a side view showing how the doors stand out about 1" from the back frame. The right photo shows a wide back frame (not hidden) with slots for the optional AirWash system that allows air to flow freely into the fireplace so you can burn fires with the doors closed.

Additional Pictures Instructions

Fig #1 - In order for me to determine which doors will and will not work, I need 3 more pictures as described below:

1: Take a closeup picture from about the distance you see below. Kneel down and try to get the opening as square as possible.
2: Take a closeup picture looking up into the top left corner.
3: Take a closeup picture looking down into the bottom left corner.

The intent of these pictures is so I can see how the black metal part of the fireplace is constructed right around the opening and see where the air vents are located.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
