Customer Comments: Need glass doors for outdoor fireplace.
Our Comments: This fireplace requires special doors that allow air to flow freely into the fireplace. This can be done by fitting the doors inside and leaving the slot at the bottom exposed, overlapping the tile with 1/4" spacers behind the door frame, or overlapping the metal with doors that have offset hinges with space between the outer frame and door frame. Here are examples of all three types.
Fireplace Opening: 40 3/4" W x 20 1/4" H
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable. The doors fit inside the opening, so some of the rusted metal fireplace will be visible.
Option #: Design Specialties Stiletto Aluminum Cabinet Fireplace Door in Black with Gate Mesh Backup Doors.
These doors are made from 304 stainless steel with a powder coat finish. They are built with 1/4" spacers on the back of the frame that creates a gap between the frame and the tile to allow air to flow into the fireplace.
Option #: Hearth Creations 304 Stainless Steel Bifold Fireplace Glass Door in Matte Black with Gate Mesh Backup Doors.
These doors are hand crafted by a blacksmith from 1/4" thick zinc coated wrought iron with a powder coat finish. These are the most heavy duty doors on the market and made to fit just inside the tile for a clean finished look. The doors are made with offset hinges to allow air to flow freely between the door frame and outer frame.
Option #: Hand Crafted Pacifico Zinc Coated Wrought Iron Bifold Fireplace Door in Vintage Iron with Gate Mesh Backup Doors.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.
Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
