Customer Comments: Looking for fireplace doors on one or both sides of this outdoor fireplace/chimney. Burns wood. Surround is steel. Thanks! It is a natural rust patina, but it was coated with "sharkhide" to protect it a bit. Hope being in the salt air doesn't ruin it! For the doors - good question. Maybe raw steel to match the rest? The problem we have is we can't use the fireplace if there is any breeze because both sides are open. The thinking is if we close one side, then we can use it. Does that logic hold?
Our Comments: As I mentioned in our email conversation, I'm not too keen on using a raw metal as there are moving parts (hinges and latches) that might rust out and become fused or difficult to operate. You would need to keep them lubricated. I recommend using alumininum, stainless steel or zinc primed wrought iron, all with some type of powder coat finish. It is important to use ceramic glass as well. Some brands can provide ceramic glass with clean edges allowing them to make fullview doors with no obstructions. Others have ceramic glass with rough edges that must be fully framed.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.
These doors are made from 304 stainless steel with a powder coat finish including the hinges and mesh. The ceramic glass must be fully framed with this brand. 304 Stainless is not marine grade, but holds up better than normal steel when made with a powder coat finish.
These wrought iron doors are hand forged and finished with a zinc primed powder coat or paint. These doors take on a more rugged natural look with tasteful details to best compliment your beautiful steel fireplace.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
