Custom Fireplace Glass Doors - Project #20663

Customer Comments: I need a fireplace screen.

Our Comments: Below are several types of screens and doors that can be custom made to fit your fireplace.

Fireplace Opening: 75 1/2" W x 39" H x 6" (Off The Floor)

Before:

Mesh Curtains

Mesh curtains are an affordable option that is convenient. Simply open and close the curtains when tending the fire. The bottom bar is optional and helps prevent ashes and logs from falling out of the firelace.

Free Standing Screen

Free standing screens are a less expensive alternative and offer a great view of the fire. They are less convenient than some of the other options since they must be moved and leaned against something every time you tend the fire.

Mesh Doors

Mesh doors are a more functional alternative to free standing screens because you do not have to move them out of the way every time you tend the fire.

Glass Doors

The glass doors are a great choice as they can be closed when the fire is dying out or not being used to prevent cold air from rushing into your home during the night. If you have them made with ceramic glass, you can even burn fires with them with the doors closed to improve efficiency.

Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.

The Ultimate Treatment

Below is the ultimate treatment for a large firelace raised off the floor. These sliding barn doors can be made with glass with gate mesh backup doors behind the glass, or without glass, just sliding gate mesh doors. Because the doors slide off to the side, you will not have large glass doors that swing out. You can burn fires with the doors closed using tempered glass as long as the flames are 8" or more away from the glass. This is a very functional and elegant treatment as shown by the example from a prevous customer.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
