Customer Comments: The fireplace opening is 42 inches wide and 25.5 inches tall. Yes, we do prefer matte black with glass doors. Very simple. We were looking at something like the amazon screen shot attached (see Fig. 1 below), but all of those are too tall by the time we get the 42" width. Thank you for providing the mock up options and quote!
Our Comments: What you have is called a zero clerance or prefab fireplace, which is a metal box framed into your house with 2x4s. These types of fireplaces require airflow into the vents inside the fireplace to keep it cool and prevent the wood framing from catching fire. You cannot use any of the mass produced doors like the example you shared from Amazon, Home Depot or Lowe's because they will block those air vents and create a potential fire hazard. Those doors are only designed for masonry fireplace (read the . If you install that type, it can overheat your fireplace and potentially cause the 2x4s to catch fire. Glass doors for fireplaces like your must be made with special air vents that allow air into the fireplace to prevent overheating. The two doors below are designed specifically for zero clearance fireplaces.
Mesh Curtains: I recommend adding mesh curtains to the doors below rather than gate mesh backup doors. If you keep the mesh curtains open when not using the fireplace, they will help hide the unsightly black metal that is visible on the sides.
Fireplace Opening: 42" W x 25 1/2" H
Aluminum doors are not as heavy duty as solid steel or wrought iron, but they are very popular because they are the least expensive alternative.
Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut. This particular design is very minimalistic with two doors and no visible handles.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
