Arched Screens and Doors for Arched Fireplace - Project #20657

Customer Comments: We are interested in either a door or a screen, we aren't sure which is best for us and would like some help deciding. Width 28 1/8, height at center is 23 3/4, sides height is 20 3/4. The lip that comes out is 9inches.

Our Comments: Free standing screens can be a less expensive alternative, but they are not as convenient as a door because they must be moved aside and set on the floor every time you tend the fire. Doors can be made as a cabinet or a single door and can have just wire mesh or glass with wire mesh backup doors behind the glass. Glass doors are the ultimate treatment because you can close them after building a fire when you are ready to retire for the evening, which will keep cold air from rushing down the chimney during the night. If you add ceramic glass, you can burn fires with the doors closed, or close them in the middle of a fire if you must leave unexpectely.

Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
