Customer Comments: 28x42 opening. Medium range steel doors option #2 is something we like
Our Comments: Here are some from low to high end for comparison. The Aluminum and steel doors cannot be made with a draft assembly and should be burned with the doors open. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, you will need wrought iron doors with ceramic glass. If your existing mesh curtains are closer than 2" from the opening, you may need to remove them to install new doors. In either case, we recommend adding gate mesh backup doors instead of mesh curtains as they are sturdier and more functional.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.
Fireplace Opening: 42" W x 28" H
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.
Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.
Hand crafted doors take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship tasteful details.
First, I need 3 additional pictures:
1: Take a closeup picture from about the same distance as the picture above so I can clearly see the fireplace.
2: Take a picture looking up at the top left corner so I can see how the mesh mechanism and how the fireplace is configured in the upper corner.
3: Take a picture looking down at the bottom left corner so I can see where the mesh hangs and the details of the corner.
Measurements:
W1: Width between the stones at the bottom
W2: Width between the front edges of the firebricks at the front inside the fireplace.
H: Height of the stone opening
D: Depth of the mesh curtains from the front of the stone.
About the Mesh Curtains:
Each of the doors has a subframe that projects back inside the fireplace. The depth differs depending on the door you choose. If the mesh curtains are closer than 2" from the opening, the subframe may hit the curtains. To resolve this, you can remove the mesh curtains and use gate mesh backup doors that are behind the glass and attached to the new door frame, or we can choose a door that has less depth. The gate mesh backup doors provide better spark protection and a cleaner look, so if the mesh is in the way, we suggest the gate mesh backup doors.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
