Custom Doors for Heatilator Mark 123 Fireplace - Project #20564

Customer Comments: I have a Heatilator Mark 123, a prefabricated (zero-clearance) wood-burning fireplace unit. It's raised off the ground with no ledge, so I'm having trouble finding doors that fit. It seems to have inserts on the sides, possibly for doors. My cat keeps jumping over the screen we have. Interested in a quote- thank you!

Our Comments: Doors made for your Heatilator fireplace must not block the vents on the top and sides. Air slots and louvers must be incorporated into the design in order to allow proper airflow. Mesh doors will offer excellent child protection and will not block the airflow to the main side vents while glass doors require large louvers on the sides. If you choose glass doors, they should be burned with the doors open and will have wire mesh backup door behind the glass.

Inside or Overlap Fit: In each of the examples, the frame can be made to fit inside or overlapping the stones. Fitting the frame inside creates a more finished look, but requires the gap between the frame and the irregular stone be filled with mortar. Overlapping the stones requires a wider frame, but is easier to install.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
