Customer Comments: Hi! We're interested in a quote for wrought iron screen door with left hinge. I'd prefer an outside mount so we don't loose light. Prefer minimalist design but looking for sturdy structure. The tallest part of the arch is 25.25". The widest part of the opening is 45". It is irregular, that'’'s also why I'’'m thinking an outside mount. Other option is a self standing screen, but I'd still like to be able to open it, instead of move the whole thing. The rock base is about 20" off the floor so I'd have to pick it up. Thank you for sending ideas!
Our Comments: Based on your description, I have narrowed down your choices to two screens. The most sturdy will be Option #1, which is a single screen door that is mounted to the fireplace. It is made from very heavy duty 1/4" thick wrought iron that will last for decades. Option #2 is a free standing screen made from lighter weight steel. It will still need to be mounted to the fireplace, otherwise it will fall over when you open the large single door. The only reason I included the free standing model is as an alternative if Option #1 is too expensive.
Fireplace Opening: 45" W x 25 1/4" H
This is a very heavy duty door made with 1/4" solid wrought iron. It is designed to overlap the opening and has brackets that mount to the firebricks inside. There is an angle iron subframe that projects back into the fireplace about 1 1/2" that makes the door even more sturdy. The subframe adds about 1" to the amount the frame overlaps the stones. The width of the frame material is determined by the amount of irregularity in the stone plus the 1" clearance for the subframe. I'm guessing it needs to be about 3" wide to cover the irregularities, which is about how I mocked it up.
This free standing screen door is made from lighter weight steel. It will still need to be mounted to the fireplace since the single door is too heavy to open without the screen tipping over. The door fits inside the frame with a small gap between the outer frame and inner frame, unlike the wrought iron door that has an overlapping frame. The price will be about half that of the heavy wrought iron.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
