Customer Comments: Need a black fireplace screen. Dimensions 37 x 21
Our Comments: There are several types of screens to consider for a fireplace like yours that is raised in the wall. I have created some mockups to illustrate each type.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8” from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.
Fireplace Opening: 37" W x 21" H x Raised about 10" from the floor
Mesh curtains are a popular option for fireplaces raised in the wall. These can be made with a top bar, top and bottom bar or a 4-sided frame. It is recommended that you have a bar on the bottom or 4-sided frame to prevent logs from rolling out onto the floor.
Option #1: Stone Manufacturing C92 Bar and Mesh in Black with Matching F92 Bottom Bar.
Normally, these screens will have rear legs that project back inside the fireplace so they can stand on their own. With fireplaces raised in the wall, those rear legs will hit the wall at the floor level, so they must either be removed or the screen must stand out about 5" from the fireplace. If the rear legs are removed, the screen must always lean against something when you move it to tend the fire.
Option #3: Hearth Creations Single Panel Fireplace Screen in Matte Black. Must Be Moved when Tending the Fire.
This type of screen stands in front of the fireplace and affords great spark protection, but does not prevent sparks and embers from landing on the hearth below. This type of screen will stand on it's own without needing to lean on anything.
Option #4: Hearth Creations Free Standing Bowed Screen in Charcoal Gray. Must Be Moved when Tending the Fire.
Option #5: Stone Manufacturing Bowed Spark Guard with Wire Mesh Sides and Center Mesh Curtains. Does Not Need To Be Moved when Tending the fire.
Mesh doors that are attached to the fireplace provide exclent spark protection. These can be attached with pressure screws that do not require drilling.
Option #6: Hearth Creations Mesh Door in Matte Black. Can be made from formed sheet metal with seams or heavy 3/16" thick solid laser cut steel without seams (shown).
Glass doors are likely the best solution for fireplaces raised in the wall. These can be made with gate mesh backup doors so you can enjoy the fire with the doors open and close them when the fire starts to die out, keeping the warm air in and cold air out with your damper open overnight.
Option #7: Design Specialties Brookfield Bifold Fireplace Glass Door in Rustic Black with Clear Glass and Gate Mesh Backup Doors.
Option #8: Design Specialties Hudson Roller Sliding Cabinet Fireplace Glass Door in Natural Iron with Clear Glass and Gate Mesh Backup Doors. The doors slide left and right to open and close.
Option #9: Design Specialties Raill Sliding Cabinet Fireplace Glass Door in Black with Clear Glass and Gate Mesh Backup Doors. The doors slide left and right to open and close.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
