Customer Comments: We would like a FP screen to fit our FP, which is not a standard size. 36" Wide X 21" Tall - and we want these dimensions so the slate is not covered up. We are interested in Glass and in the screens that are curved out. Looking for your design suggestions! Our FP is a gas FP so will not be burning any wood.
Our Comments: Here are some examples to consider. The free standing glass screens vary in price dramatically based on the feet and type of glass. We also included a glass door that you might like.
Fireplace Opening: 36" W x 21" H
The first screen uses steel feet painted black and has 1/4" tempered glass, which has a slight green hue. The second screen has half round solid brass blocks for feet and uses 3/8" thick low iron ultra clear glass (Starphire), which has a real look of elegance with the slight blue edges and extra clear glass.
Option #1: Hearth Creations Free Standing Glass Screen with Black Steel Feet and 1/4" Clear Tempered Glass.
Option #2: Stone Manufacturing 1G10 Glass Screen with Solid Brass Half Round Block Feet in Gloss Black and 3/8" Thick Low Iron Ultra-Clear Starphire Glass.
Bowed screens provide a nice modern touch and stand on their own. This model is made from solid steel in a black powder coat finish.
Glass doors can be made with a very narrow frame that overlaps the slate just 1/2" on the top and each side for very clean modern look. They also help keep the cold air coming into the home since the damper must be propped open permanently when gas logs are installed.
Option #4: Design Specialties Stiletto Aluminum Narrow Framed Fireplace Glass Door in Rustic Black with Clear Glass.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.
Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.

Photo #1: With your camera sideways, take a picture directly in front of the fireplace from far enough away to see the entire fireplace floor to ceiling like this.

Photo #2: With your back to the fireplace, take a picture looking straight out into the room so we can see the decor directly in front of the fireplace.
