Customer Comments: Looking for cover to our fireplace to keep out of reach of kids
Our Comments: Single panel free standing screens are the least expensive and seem to do a good job protection children. Some can be connected using a spring mount as shown below. Mesh doors or glass doors are more expensive, but offer the best protection. Some can have child safety latches or keyed locks making it nearly impossible for a child to get into the fireplace.
Fireplace Opening: Unknown
Option #1: Hearth Creations Single Panel Screen in Matte Black (cannot be attached).
Option #2: Stone Manufacturing 1P10M Solid Brass Fireplace Screen in Polished Brass. Can be attached with spring clip.
Option #3: Stone Manufacturing 1P52M Solid Brass Fireplace Screen with Traditional Half Oval Casting Frame in Polished Brass. Can be attached with spring clip.
These offer the most protection. Mesh doors can be left closed when the fire is on. Glass doors must be open when burning gas logs, so it is best to have mesh doors behind the glass to protect children with the gas is on.
Option #4: Hearth Creations Bent Steel Framed Mesh Door in Matte Black. Does not have lock.
Option #5: Design Specialties Brookfield Aluminum Bifold Fireplace Glass Door in Vintage Iron with Child Safety Clips.
Option #6: Hearth Creations Flat Steel Fireplace Glass Door in Matte Black with Gate Mesh Backup Doors and Keyed Door Lock. This door offers the most protection.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.
Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
