Customer Comments: Hello Greg, I am interested in the High End Stainless Steel doors or the Affordable Aluminum in black as shown in Project #11311 on your website. I prefer a smooth finish and I am wondering what the "textured black" is on the aluminum one. I have a Villawood Outdoor stainless steel prefab fireplace installed on a screened in porch in Stow, Maine. The stone veneer is Basalt. The stone surround is 7/8 - 1" thick. Can you tell me the overall width of the door & does it protrude or inset from the stone surround?
Our Comments: Some doors are made to fit inside the Basalt and some will overlap. Black is available in either smooth or textured. I recommend overlap fitting doors as they will hide any irregularities in the fireplace opening if the tiles are not perfectly square. You can keep your existing mesh curtains or add stainless steel gate mesh backup doors for better spark protection.
Fireplace Opening: 36 1/8" W x 20" H (Metal) | 36 7/8" W x 21 5/16" H (Stone)
Aluminum is an excellent material for outdoor fireplaces because it does not rust like steel. An outdoor package is available where they make the hinges and some other hardware in stainless steel along with stainless steel mesh, all painted black. The inside fit model comes only as a cabinet door.
Option #1: PW Breckenridge Aluminum Cabinet Outdoor Fireplace Door in Rustic Black with Clear Glass. Inside Fit with a 2 1/8" Wide Frame. Shown with existing mesh curtains.
Option #2: Hearth Creations Profile-2 Aluminum Bifold Outdoor Fireplace Glass Door in Matte Black with Gray Glass. Overlap Fit with 2 5/8" Wide Frame and 3/4" Protrusion. Shown with High Quality Stainless Steel Gate Mesh Backup Doors.
This door frame is made entire from 3/16" thick stainless steel. The hinges and other hardware are also stainless steel including the mesh backup doors. This door uses 1/4" spacers when installed overlapping the facia of a zero clearance fireplace (See diagram below).
Option #3: Hearth Creations Stainless Steel Outdoor Fireplace Glass Door in Matte Black with Gray Glass. 2" Wide x 3/16" Thick Frame with 1/4" Spacers (7/16" Total Protrusion). Shown with High Quality Stainless Steel Gate Mesh Backup Doors.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.
Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
