Customer Comments: Greg, it was great to talk to you this afternoon. I am attaching the photos for my 2 fireplaces. I would like to keep the costs as modest as I reasonably can without making the doors look cheap and flimsy. We live in New Rochelle, NY, in case that makes any difference in the products you would choose. I think I want to do doors with outside trim, not the ones that insert into the opening. It is my understanding that the ones that insert into the opening are more expensive, but please correct me if I'm wrong.
For this fireplace (Living Room): Trim on outside of opening, Iid like to keep it at less than 2 inches.
Our Comments: Whether the door fits inside or overlaps the opening does not affect the price. Inside fitting doors can have a narrower profile since the frame does not need to overlap the opening. When designing a door to fit inside, we leave a 1/4" gap on the top and each side, which must be filled with mortar. On this firelace, you would then paint the mortar. So the installation is a bit more difficult fitting doors inside, but the doors seal better and the finished look may be more appealing.
Fireplace Opening: 59 7/8" W x 28 5/8" H?
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.
Option #1: Design Specialties Brookfield Light Gauge Aluminum Fireplace Glass Door in Rustic Black with Clear Glass. 2 1/8" Wide Frame (Overlap Fit).
Option #2: Design Specialties Stiletto Light Gauge Aluminum Fireplace Glass Door in Rustic Black with Clear Glass. 1" Wide Frame (Inside Fit).
These doors are made using a heavier gauge aluminum than the ones above. They are a little more expensive, but feel sturdier and have a nicer finish if you prefer a brushed nickel. The only downside is, they cannot be made more than 60" wide, so your only choice would be to do them as an inside fit.
Option #3: Hearth Creations Profile-4 Heavy Gauge Aluminum Fireplace Glass Door in Brite Nickel (Anodized) with Gray Glass. 1" Wide Frame (Inside Fit).
Option #4: Hearth Creations Profile-3 Heavy Gauge Aluminum Fireplace Glass Door in Brite Nickel (Anodized) with Clear Glass. 1 3/4" Wide Frame (Inside Fit).
Option #5: Hearth Creations Profile-5 Heavy Gauge Aluminum Fireplace Glass Door in Brite Nickel (Anodized) with Gray Glass. 2 1/2" Wide Frame (Inside Fit).
These doors are made using 3/16" thick solid stainless steel that is laser cut. The frame with can be as narrow as 1 1/4" for an inside fit and 1 1/2" for an overlap fit, depending on the lintel thickness. If you are close to the ocean, stainless steel is a better choice due to the salt air. The same look is also available in normal steel with a satin nickel overlay or just plain black in either stainless steel or normal steel.
Option #6: Hearth Creations Stainless Steel Fireplace Glass Door in Satin Stainless with Clear Glass. 2" Wide Frame (Overlap Fit).
Option #7: Hearth Creations Stainless Steel Fireplace Glass Door in Satin Stainless with Clear Glass. 1 1/4" Wide Frame (Inside Fit).
High End Sliding Doors
Sliding doors are very unique with a minimal appearance. The two outer panes of glass are fixed, while the inner panes slide left and right to open and close. These doors are best suited for large fireplaces with gas logs. Frame will be 2" to 2 1/2" wide depending on the lintel thickness. Nickel and Chrome finishes are made using solid brass for an extremely durable long-lasting finish that never needs to be polished.
Option #8: Stone Manufacturing SD Sliding Fireplace Door in Gloss Black with 2" Wide Frame. (Overlap Fit).
Option #9: Stone Manufacturing SD Sliding Fireplace Door in Gloss Black with 2" Wide Frame and 1" Half Round Casting Trim in Polished Chrome. (Overlap Fit).
Option #10: Stone Manufacturing SD Sliding Fireplace Door with 2" Wide Frame and #99 Wave Casting Trim in Polished Nickel. (Inside Fit).
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
