Glass Doors for Wide Stone Farm Fireplace - Project #20154
Customer Comments: New apartment at our farm. Would like fire screen with doors.
Our Comments: Here are a variety of options made from different materials in various price ranges. Because the stone is bumpy, we recommend fitting the door inside the opening and filling the gaps between the frame and stone with mortar. This will look best and provide a better seal.
Fireplace Opening: 52 1/2" W x 25 3/4" H

Measuring Instructions
Width

Fig. 1: Measuring the width: The red vertical lines represent where the level was placed to find the narrowest stone. The black part of the vertical lines indicates where a pencil mark was made. “W” is the measurement between the two pencil marks.
- Hold a level vertically to the right side of the opening.
- Line up the level with the stone that comes into the opening the most.
- Make sure the bubble at the top is level.
- Make a mark with a pencil at the edge of the level that is lined up with the narrowest stone.
- Mark can be at the top or bottom of the opening.
- Do the same for the left side.
- Measure between the two marks to get the minimum width between the stones.
Height

Fig. 2: Measuring Height: The red horizontal lines represent where the level was placed to find the lowest stone at the top and tallest stone at the bottom. The black part of the horizontal lines indicates where a pencil mark was made. “H” is the measurement between the two pencil marks.
Measuring the Height (Fig. 2 above):
- Hold a level horizontally across the top of the opening. If you do not have a long enough level, place it on top of a straight piece of wood.
- Line up the level with the stone that drops down into the opening the most.
- Make sure the bubble at the top is level.
- Make a mark with a pencil at the edge of the level that is lined up with the lowest stone.
- Mark can be at the left or right side of the opening.
- Do the same for the bottom, lining the level up with the stone that sticks up the most.
- Measure between the two marks to get the minimum height between the stones.

Glass Door Mesh Options
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
