Glass Doors for Fireplace with Modern Concrete Mantel Surround - Project #11647

Customer Comments: Hi! Would like to have glass doors to shut and open while fire is burning. Could the doors fold on each side so don't stick out so far when open? The internal opening is 37 1/4 high and 35 wide in inches. The grey surrounding frame is 3 inches wide top and sides and one inch thick, and the mantle and side supports are 41/2 inches deep. Looks like could fit nicely under the mantle and side supports with the three inch frame supporting the proposed treatment. I would like the design to be as simple as possible to not take away from the fireplace and black trim to blend in. Project #11203 along those lines. Thanks,

Our Comments: Bifold doors that fold back are not a problem. Here are 3 examples of minimal style glass doors that can be burned open or closed and will look great in your room.

Fireplace Opening: 35" W x 37 1/4" H

Before:

Affordable Aluminum Doors

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.

Stiletto
Stiletto Fireplace Door Option #1: Stiletto Profiles. The cutback frame is more flush to the fireplace, but only allows for 1/4" overlap, so the fireplace must be perfectly square.

Medium Range Steel Doors

Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.

Legend
Legend Fireplace Door Option #2: Design Specialties Legend Fireplace Glass Door with Special 1" Wide Frame in Rustic Black with Clear Glass and Mesh Curtains. This door only allows for a 1/4" overlap, but the frame can be made wider if more overlap is needed.
Slim Moderne
MET Fireplace Door Option #3: Design Specialties MET Glass Door in Rustic Black with Clear Glass and Mesh Curtains. This door has a very minimalist look about it, and is the door we recommend the most for this application.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
