Customer Comments: Hi, I'm looking for ideas for my corner fireplace. It has two sides open so will need two doors. We just had the stone done and like the open look. Interested in a thin frame that doesn't block the inside.
Our Comments: Here are several examples of doors that can be made to fit your fireplace. If you will be burning real wood, you are going to want mesh curtains or gate mesh backup doors behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. With the Brookfield mockups below we show how those options might affect your view into the fireplace. Mesh curtains require that the corner post is at least 3" back from the opening depending on the door model, so gate mesh doors may be your only option if the post is too close. We will discuss this over the phone.
Fireplace Opening: 38 1/2" W (left) x 26" W (right) x 28 1/8" H
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.
Option #1: Hearth Creations Profile 4 Corner Fireplace Glass Door in Matte Black with Mesh Curtains. This frame is very narrow and can only overlap the stone 1/2", so there may be visible gaps if the stones vary that much.
Option #2: Design Specialties Stiletto Corner Fireplace Glass Door. This frame is too narrow to overlap and must fit inside the opening. The gaps around the frame will need to be filled with mortar.
Option #3: Design Specialties Brookfield Corner Fireplace Glass Door in Natural Iron with Gate Mesh Backup Doors.
Option #4: Design Specialties Brookfield Corner Fireplace Glass Door in Vintage Iron with Mesh Curtains.
Option #5: Design Specialties Brookfield Corner Fireplace Glass Door in Rustic Black with Mesh Curtains (open).
Hand crafted doors take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship tasteful details.
Option #6: Hearth Creations Iron Age 2 Corner Fireplace Glass Door with Hammered Texture in Matte Black.
Option #7: Hearth Creations Iron Age 3 Corner Fireplace Glass Door with Chiseled Texture in Clear Natural Iron.
The Hybrid-2 door from Stone Manufacturing has the least amount of frame and will present the best view of the fireplace inside. There is no frame on the sides at all, just an angle iron at the top and bottom to support the door hardware. There will be a small open gap between the stone and the glass on the sides. The mockups shows a gap between the bottom frame and the stones. This may be the case if that stone is not plumb with the top stone.
Option #8: Stone Manufacturing HYBRID-2 Corner Bifold Fireplace Glass Door in Matte Black. This door has no frame on the sides.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.
Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
