Customer Comments: We are looking at your standard door options (bungalow or savannah). Fireplace opening is 40" wide and 30 3/4" high.
Our Comments: The stock Bungalow and Savannah doors are designed to sit on a hearth, not for installation on a fireplace raised in the wall like yours. Although they can be attached, the frame cannot overlap the bottom of the opening, so they look a little out of sorts as if they are floating and something is missing. Normally we would design a door with a 4-sided frame that overlaps the bottom or a door that fits inside the fireplace. Keep in mind that your stone is not flat, so a door made to fit on the outside will have noticeable gaps between the frame and the stones. When doors are made to fit inside, those gaps can be filled with mortar and it looks very clean and finished.
Fireplace Opening: 40" W x 30 3/4" H
These doors are made to sit flat on a hearth. You can install them on a raised opening, but there is no frame at the bottom to overlap so they look a little odd. They are a lot less expensive, so the choice becomes more about the budget than the look.
Option #1: SA-44315 Savannah Stock Fireplace Glass Door in Rustic Black with Mesh Curtains.
Option #2: BG-46315 Bungalow Stock Fireplace Glass Door in Rustic Black with Mesh Curtains.
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.
Option #3: Brookfield Fireplace Glass Door 4-Sided Frame with Draft in Natural Iron. Shown with Mesh Curtains.
Option #4: Stiletto Fireplace Glass Door 3-Sided Frame w/Draft and Mesh Curtains. Shown as an inside fit with mortar on the top and sides.
Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.
Option #5: Carolina Window Pane Fireplace Glass Door in Rustic Black with Mesh Curtains. Shown as an overlap fit.
Hand crafted doors take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship tasteful details.
Option #6: Craftsman Fireplace Glass Door in Forged Iron with Gate Mesh Backup Doors. Shown as an overlap fit.
These doors are hand crafted by skilled artisans from Solid Brass or Steel, depending on the finish that is desired. Very high end, and very refined. Items made from solid brass come in a wide variety of hand crafted patinas and other finishes. Satin Nickel finishes done on solid brass are the finest quality and will not rust like plated steel.
Option #7: HYBRID-2 Bifold Fireplace Glass Door in Satin Nickel with Mesh Curtains. This door has no frame on the sides, so it fits inside without the need for mortar. The position of the lintel plays a role as to whether or not this door can be installed on the fireplace.
Option #8: EDGE-HH-FL Edge Hidden Hinge Folding Door in Oil Rubbed Steel with Mesh Curtains. This door has an angle iron frame on all 4 sides where all you see is the edge of the angle iron around the opening. Very solid clean simple look. Shown with mortar on all 4 sides. This is our favorite door for this type of application.
These are baked enamel finishes, so they are all heat resistant. These are all Group 1 finishes, which are same price group as flat black.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
