Glass Doors for Victorian/Craftsman Fireplace - Project #10334

Customer Comments: Hello, Our fireplace is an old Victorian masonry fireplace from 1920, built to burn coal. We have converted it into a gas fireplace, and because of its shallow fireplace box want to install a Rasmussen CoalFire chillbuster gas set Classic style. California rules state that gas fireplaces have to be vented, so we can't install a top damper to prevent drafts through our chimney. The alternative is to install a fireplace glass door. We haven't found the right door yet, even though we liked the Forged Iron Napa Valley door, but it might be a bit tricky to install a door because of the various depths of the opening box and the round pillars to the left and right of the opening. We'd appreciate any tips or suggestions you can provide. Fireplace Opening Measurements: 23 inch x 25.5 inch

Our Comments: There are two alternatives here. (Option #1 & Fig. #1) Install the door at the inner opening at the back of the columns and have it made with a hearth flange at the bottom that fills the gap. This will likely look the best, but will really make the internal firebox small. (Option #2 & Fig. #2) install the door at the outer opening (flush with the bottom of the columns) and use finished returns on the sides that go back to the inner opening. You will see illustrations at the bottom of this project that clarify these two concepts.

Fireplace Opening: 23" W x 25 1/2" H

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.

Glass Options

Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.

Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
