Most of our Fireplace Glass Doors can be used with our Airculator fireplace heat exchanger. We custom make the doors to sit on top of the heater bar. Most of the doors from Design Specialties can be burned closed to take full advantage of the heat circulating power of the fan. Made from solid welded steel and designed to handle high temperatures, the Airculator heater is a great affordable alternative compared to the high cost of installing a wood stove.

Grate Heater Sizing

The Heavy Duty Grate Heater is designed for use with masonry fireplaces that are at least 29 1/2" wide at the opening, 22" wide at the back and 20" deep. This unit was not designed or tested for use in zero clearance prefabricated fireplaces.

There is a grill in front that includes side extenders that are cut on the job to ajust anywhere from 29 1/4" to 51" wide. For the most efficiency, you can add glass doors that sit on top of the front grill. The grill adds 1 3/8" to the height, so be sure to deduct that from the overall height of the doors you will need to fit the fireplace.

Performance

On average, the grate heater can produce about 40,000 BTUs with hot air blowing out up to 200F. The actual performance varies depending on the wood you burn and how big the fire is. You should always maintain an average fire that is safe for the fireplace. Building raging fires will most likely damage the fan unit.

Operation

The blower is heat activated, turning on at 110F and turning back on at 90F. You can adjust the fan speed with the rheostat dial. When it is on low it is very quiet, but does get more audible as you turn it up. You must keep it plugged in at all times when a fire is burning as the constant circulation of air through the unit keeps the components cool so they do not melt.

Dropped Firebox

If your fireplace floor is lower than the hearth, you can raise the heater up to 3" using 1/2" bolts. Although the bolts are not included, there are 4 welded nuts on the unit that allow you to use bolts that you provide.

Grate Heater History

The Original Grate Heater was invented by Ron and Dan Shimek (the founding fathers of Heat &s; Glo) in 1977. The original design has withstood the test of time and is still being used today. It was the second product made by Heat & Glo and used the same concept as the first Heat & Glo product, the freestanding wood fireplace with heat tubes for internal heat exchange.
